Complying with New Tax Laws in A Changing Age – Why Automation is Your Business’ Best Friend

In a post-South Dakota-vs-Wayfair world, eCommerce is experiencing changes left and right when it comes to how business owners and the states they do business in look at sales tax. As individual states begin implementing new laws that pertain to eCommerce, online merchants must respond by learning which laws pertain to them.   The next step in the process is to decide what programs online retailers must use to stay current on tax trends, laws, and regulations. It is likely that you need some type of third party for Magento sales tax integration. These programs collect sales tax online for you, so that you don’t have to wonder if you are putting your business at risk, as it pertains to online sales tax rules.   Many of the laws that are now being changed were originally put in place in the 1990s or before. At that time, eCommerce was a remote possibility, but nothing that required legislating.   • You could have nexus that you don’t realize you have. If you have business connections all of the map, or are frequently at trade shows or pop-ups, you could have sales nexus that you are not accounting for. This puts you at risk for penalty.
  • If you are not collecting sales tax in all of the states where you have a nexus, you could be fined or audited. In severe scenarios, you could lose your business.
  • Online sales tax rules are still changing. Some states are still changing and modifying their laws. Automation helps you stay on top of it.
